62nd United Nations General Assembly Session

Posted: September 21, 2007

Representatives from the world's nations are convened in New York for the 62nd United Nations General Assembly. They will debate a spectrum of issues of importance to the international community.

Issues on the agenda include the Iranian nuclear threat, implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 calling for the disarming of Hezbollah, the return of kidnapped Israeli soldiers and the genocide in Sudan's Darfur region.

Issues ADL would like addressed at the 62nd General Assembly include:

  • The prevention of  Iran's development of nuclear weapons, with the Security Council moving expeditiously to impose a third sanctions regime on Iran

  • The immediate release of three Israeli soldiers – Gilad Shalit, Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev - still being held captive by Hamas and Hezbollah since the summer of 2006.

  • The full implementation and enforcement of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which call for the disarming of Hezbollah and the prevention of its rearming by Iran and Syria.

  • For the international community to continue its policy of isolating Hamas.  Hamas has not met the international community's basic conditions for acceptance:  recognizing Israel's right to exist; condemning the use of terrorism; and recognizing past agreements between the Palestinian Authority and the State of Israel.  It continues to support the launching of rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, terrorizing the population of Sderot and injuring scores of Israeli soldiers.
  • Establish Israel as a member state with full rights within the United Nations community with specific focus on Israel's right to complete participation in consultation groups and the General Assembly, Israel's candidacy for a term as a temporary rotating member of the U.N. Security Council for 2019-2020, and Israel's overall diplomatic standing within the international community.
  • Eliminate the practice of the U.N.'s various bodies adopting blatantly one-sided anti-Israel resolutions while ignoring the dangerous actions of Israel's neighbors and others around the world; address the great number of biased anti-Israel resolutions already passed; and abolish anti-Israel Palestinian committees.
  • Combat racism, anti-Semitism, and discrimination in all its forms of all peoples everywhere.
  • Stop the genocide in Sudan's Darfur region and elsewhere whenever the threat arises.
