June 5, 2007 marked the 40th anniversary of the Six Day War, an event which changed the political and physical landscape of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Middle East, and whose impact is felt until today.  Among the major outcomes of the war was the reunification of Jerusalem and the new Israeli control of the West Bank and Gaza Strip with its population of at least one million Arabs.   Many of the issues at the core of Israel's continuing conflict with the Palestinians – Israeli settlements, the status of Jerusalem, UN resolutions on the conflict, even the first Arab-Israeli peace negotiations – can be traced back to the Six Day War.

This report addresses the facts behind the outbreak of the war, as well as the issues that arose out of the conflict.
