Terrorist Video Producer Captured In Iraq

Posted: November 30, 2005

A man allegedly responsible for producing propaganda videos for the Jaish al-Mujahideen terrorist group in Iraq has been apprehended by coalition forces.

Ahmad Ni’mah Khudayyir Abbas (a.k.a. Abu Shihab) was captured in October 2005, in a raid on a suspected safe house in Abu Ghraib, according to U.S. military officials.  Abbas was identified by U.S. forces as a “lieutenant” in Jaish al-Mujahideen, a group linked to the Al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist organization.  It operates in Baghdad and has cells in Mosul, Fallujah and Ramadi.

Abbas was in charge of recording recruitment and training videos and copying the materials onto CDs for distribution, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Central Command on November 24.  These videos would then be uploaded to various jihadist Web sites, including the Jaish al-Mujahideen site and on-line jihadist discussion boards.  In addition to recruiting terrorists and foreign fighters, the videos, which showed various attacks in Iraq, were allegedly also used to provide information on possible targets to other terrorists.

Abbas’ ability to produce the propaganda materials resulted in his being made a “lieutenant” in Jaish al-Mujahideen.  In addition to overseeing the group’s propaganda arm, Abbas is suspected by coalition forces of being involved in “real world” terrorist-related activities, including coordinating purchases of weapons and explosives for insurgent cells and taking part in mortar attacks and bombings.

Coalition forces also said Abbas admitted that Jaish al-Mujahideen cheated Iraqi citizens out of money by posing as a Baghdad children’s charity and then using the funds it collected to finance terror attacks.
