The following is a list of American Muslim extremists charged, convicted or sentenced in 2012 on terrorism-related offenses, ranging from providing material support to foreign terrorist organizations to plotting violent attacks in the U.S. The list also includes other Americans involved in terrorist plots and activities with terrorist organizations whose ideologies are rooted in radical interpretations of Islam. Those who were charged and later acquitted of terror-related offenses are not included in the list.

  • June 18, 2012 New York American citizen Wesam el-Hanafi pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists.

  • June 8, 2012 Illinois -- Naturalized U.S. citizen Raja Lahrasib Khan is sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for attempting to provide material support to terrorists.

  • June 4, 2012 New York Sabirhan Hasanoff, a dual American-Australian citizen, pleads guilty to providing material support to Al Qaeda by providing computer systems, expertise and other assistance.

  • May 24, 2012 Texas American citizen Naser Jason Abdo is convicted on charges of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, attempted murder of United States officers or employees and four additional weapons charges in connection with a plot to attack Fort Hood military personnel.

  • May 24, 2012 Texas American citizen Barry Walter Bujol, Jr. is sentenced to 20-years in prison for attempting to provide material support to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, among other charges. 

  • May 21, 2012 Ohio Hor Akl, a dual American and Lebanese citizen, is sentenced to 75-months imprisonment for providing material support to Hezbollah.

  • May 14, 2012 Virginia Anes Subasic, a naturalized citizen from Bosnia, is convicted on charges of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and conspiring to conspiring to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons abroad.

  • May 4 Pennsylvania Mohammad Hassan Khalid, a legal permanent resident from Pakistan, pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide funds and recruit terrorists in South Asia and Europe.

  • May 1, 2012 New York Adis Medunjanin, an American citizen from Bosnia, is convicted on charges of helping an Al Qaeda plot to detonate homemade explosives on the New York City subway system.

  • April 13, 2012 Virginia Jubair Ahmad, a U.S. permanent resident from Pakistan, is sentenced to 12-years in prison for producing a video on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

  • April 12, 2012 Massachusetts American citizen Tarek Mehanna is sentenced to 17-and-a-half-years in prison for conspiring to provide material support to Al Qaeda, conspiring to commit murder in a foreign country and other crimes.

  • April 12, 2012 New York Agron Hasbajrami, a legal resident from Albania, pleads guilty to one count of attempting to providing material support to terrorists.

  • April 6, 2012 Maryland Naturalized U.S. citizen Antonio Martinez is sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempting to detonate a car bomb at an army recruiting center in Catonsville, Maryland.

  • March 7, 2012   Maryland -- U.S. citizen Craig Baxam is formally indicted on charges of attempting to provide material support to Al Shabaab.

  • March 2, 2012   New York Betim Kaziu, an American citizen from Brooklyn, is sentenced to 27-years imprisonment for conspiring to join a foreign terrorist group with links to Al Qaeda.

  • February 29, 2012  New York Jose Pimentel, a naturalized American citizen from the Dominican Republic, is indicted on charges of planning to attack military personnel and other targets in the United States.

  • February 10, 2012 New York Mohammad Zazi is sentenced to four and half years in prison for making false statements to federal authorities investigating a plot to detonate explosives in the U.S.

  • February 6, 2012 Minnesota U.S. citizen Ahmed Hussein Mahamud pleads guilty to conspiring to provide material support to Al Shabaab.

  • February 2, 2012 Florida Naturalized U.S. citizen Sami Osmakac is indicted on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and other firearms violations for his plot to attack various targets in Tampa.  He was arrested on January 7, 2012.
  • January 13, 2012 North Carolina American citizens Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, and Ziyad Yaghi are sentenced to 15 years and nearly 32 years in prison respectively for conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. Yaghi was also convicted of conspiring to murder, kidnap, maim and injure people. 
  • January 13, 2012 North Carolina -- Hysen Sherifi, a U.S. permanent resident from Kosovo, is sentenced to 45 years in prison for weapons charges and for conspiring to murder federal employees in a plot to attack a Quantico military base. He was also convicted of conspiring to murder, kidnap, maim and injure people.
  • January 9, 2012 Maryland U.S. citizen Craig Baxam is charged with attempting to provide material support to Al Shabaab. He was originally detained in Kenya on December 23, 2011 near the Somali border and was transferred to the U.S. on January 6, 2012.
