Terror Plots against the U.S. in 2009

The recent terror plot to send explosive-laden packages on U.S.-bound cargo flights is the latest in a series of terrorist plots targeting the U.S.  Muslim extremists have targeted U.S. transit systems, landmarks and military institutions.

In 2009 alone, there were approximately ten terrorist plots planned by Muslim extremists, including two deadly attacks on military instillations.  On June 1, Abdulahakim Mujahid Muhammad allegedly killed one uniformed American soldier and shot another at a military recruiting center in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Several months later, on November 5, Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly shot and killed 12 soldiers and one civilian and injured 32 others at the Fort Hood army base in Texas.

The following is a sampling of other plots in the U.S. foiled in 2010 and 2009.

  • An Illinois resident who attempted to bomb the federal courthouse in Springfield was arrested in September 2009 and charged with attempted murder of a federal officer or employee and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction against property owned by the United States.

  • Three American citizens and a Haitian native were arrested in June 2009 and have since been convicted of plotting to attack two synagogues in the Bronx and to shoot down planes at a military base in Newburgh, New York
