Gaza Flotilla Incident Sparks Anti-Semitism and Calls for Violence Online

Expressions of anti-Semitism and calls for violence against Israel and Jews have exploded online in response to the Israeli naval operation to stop a flotilla of ships en route to Gaza on May 31, 2010. The following is a sampling of these online reactions.

Message Boards and Forums

In response to Israel's naval operation against the flotilla, members of various English-language forums and message boards commonly used by Muslim extremists posted numerous messages that called for killing Jews:

  • Several members of Ansar Al-Mujahideen Network, an English-language Web site on which users distribute jihad-related materials, have posted threats against Jews in response to the flotilla incident. "All Jews should be gassed or thrown into oven [sic]," commented one member whose signature contains a picture of a bloody knife and says, "The only solution is the final solution!!!" A number of other posts include similar themes, including a post that reads: "Jahannam [hell] will be enough as an oven," and another saying, "Do we have someone here who can make huge ovens??" Other posts on the forum read: "Jews don't deserve the right to live" and "the only good Jew, is a dead Jew."

Another member of the Ansar Al-Mujahideen Network wrote and recorded an English song in tribute to the "Activists Who were Martyred, Wounded, and Imprisoned at the Hands of the Zionist Pigs."  The song, which is entitled "When the Jew's blood reds my knife, then my life is free from strife," was posted on the Ansar Web site on June 3, 2010 and threatens to "throw them [the Jews] in the ovens" and to "shoot and kill Jews one by one."

  • Islamic Awakening, an online Islamic message board, also included threats against Jews, at times referred to as "zionists pigs." One post says, "The only acceptable form of the Zionist is a dead Zionist.  No more peace flotilias [sic], no more peace talks. Death and destruction only until the last Zionist is removed from Palestine." Another post asks, "Why al-Qaeda does not target Zionists all over the world?"

  • The Ummah Forum, another online Islamic message board, includes comments calling for the Muslim community to "be together and wipeout the dishonorable israel [sic]."  Another post says, "There is only one way to rid the world of these filthy brothers of pigs and monkeys…And we all know what."

Extremist Groups

Several Muslim extremist organizations have issued statements online condemning Israel and Jews, and calling for a violent response to the flotilla incident:

  • Hizb ut-Tahrir America, the U.S. branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT), an international organization that seeks to establish a worldwide Islamic theocracy, released a statement, titled "Massacre at Sea, Yet Another Israeli Aggression," which condemns "the deceitful, Jewish aggressors" for attacking civilians and then blaming "the incident on their victims." The statement says, "Oh Muslims, answer the cry for help from your brothers and sisters in Palestine. Protect the innocent men, women, and children that face daily attacks on their lives, limbs, and property from the Jewish aggressor. The commanders of the Muslim armies need to break the shackles placed on them by their puppet rulers and the puppet masters in Washington and Europe to intervene on behalf of the oppressed Muslims of Palestine."

Hizb ut-Tahrir's U.K. branch issued two statements following the incident. In one statement, the group called on the armies of the surrounding Muslim countries to "liberate the usurped land" and "establish the Islamic Khilafah." In the second statement, HT again explained that the only way to "liberate Palestine from occupation or punish the crimes of the Israeli entity" is to mobilize Muslim armies to fight against Israel

The Pakistani branch of HT issued a statement saying Israel has no right to exist. The press release, titled "The Jews are Jews… Anything Could be Expected from them!!!," called for Muslim countries to attack Israel and "eradicate the state of Israel from the face of the planet." The statement ended by saying, "We call upon the Pakistani army to fulfill their responsibility and prepare nuclear bombs and other weapons for Jihad… fight under this command to annihilate Israel."

  • Revolution Muslim (RM), a New York-based anti-Semitic organization that justifies terrorist attacks and other forms of violence against non-Muslims, posted a statement issued by the Kavkaz Center, which serves as the mouthpiece for the Chechen insurgency.  The statement condemns the "Jewish massacre against human rights defenders" and "'Israel' for the bloodbath."  Contributors to RM's blog said, "May Allah(swt) hasten the destruction of the zionists [sic] and the enemies of Islam and Justice, ameen."

  • A press statement issued by the Islamic Thinkers Society (ITS), a New York-based group that supports violence in order to create a global Islamic state, calls on Muslims to help liberate the "Muslims of Falasteen [Palestine]… from the CriminalZionists [sic]." Within the statement, violent passages from the Qur'an are included. "And slay them wherever you find them…," one of the passages says.  The press statement continues, "If we were to understand these two verses from the Qur'an inrelation [sic] to the Muslims of Falasteen [Palestine], then we would know what Islam prescribes."

Terrorist Organizations

In the days following the flotilla incident, several terrorist groups issued online statements condemning Israel and urging the Muslim countries neighboring Israel to "liberate" the Palestinians:

  • Immediately following the flotilla incident, Hezbollah issued a statement, which it translated into English, calling on the entire world to cut off ties with the "Zionist entity" and to support the Palestinian people "with all possible means to aid them in liberating their land and putting an end to the nauseous Zionist nightmare."  The Hezbollah statement further condemned the "inherent evil in the Zionists psyche" and the "tyrannous force which has overtaken the Zionist leaders."  Additionally, Hezbollah criticized Western support for Israel and demanded that Arab countries surrounding Israel "to adopt a concrete strategic process to break the siege on the Gaza strip and the West Bank."
  • On June 5, 2010, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the shadow government of the Afghan Taliban, issued a statement in English that called Israel's naval operation against the flotilla emblematic of the "Zionist invaders brutality."  "There is no instance of such events in any other culture except in the (distinctive) culture of Zionism based on vulgar brutality," the statement read.  The Taliban statement also urged Muslims to liberate Jerusalem and end the blockade on Gaza. "All the Muslim rulers and people of the world should join hands to confront the contemporary arrogant colonialists and win liberations from their colonialism via jihad and sacrifices," the statement read.
