Al Qaeda Releases Videos for Cell Phones

Posted: January 23, 2008

Al Qaeda has announced the release of eight previously recorded videos in a format designed for cell phones.  The announcement was released on Web sites commonly used by Islamic militants by Al Qaeda’s media wing Al Sahab on January 4, 2008.

The announcement included a message by Al Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, asking followers to spread the terrorist group’s messages. “I asked God for the men of jihadi media to spread the message of Islam and monotheism to the world and spread real awareness to the people of the nations,” Zawahiri said in the message.

Al Qaeda has released videos designed for cell phones since at least 2005, but from September to December 2007, most of the videos released were not designed for cell phones. The videos often include English subtitles, and some have been dubbed in other languages, such as Urdu and Pashtu.

The videos made available by Al Sahab include messages from Osama bin Laden, Al Qaeda’s second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and a tribute to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the former Al Qaeda in Iraq leader killed by U.S. forces in June 2006.

Al Sahab, which indicated that it will release more of its previously recorded videos in cell phone compatible formats, has also releases video files in the past that can be played on portable media display devices.
