Alleged Al Qaeda Newscast Posted to Internet

Posted: October 21, 2005

Three editions of Sout Al Khilafa (Arabic for “Voice of the Caliphate”), a new online video newscast that claims to be the “voice of Al Qaeda on the Internet,” have been posted to the Internet by the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), a long-time “umbrella” propaganda group for Islamic terrorists.

Modeled after standard newscasts, the Arabic-language Sout al-Khilafa is divided into segments and employs an anchor who discusses world events and presents stories about terrorist activities against U.S. forces in Iraq and in other parts of the world.  The program also includes video footage of terrorist attacks.

Militant Web sites, bulletin boards and e-mail lists have posted a graphic taken from the opening sequence of the broadcast advertising the newscast, which shows the logos of major Western news sources being burned by flames.

The first 16-minute broadcast was posted to the Internet in mid-September.  The broadcast includes an image of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the anchor discusses attacks against Coalition forces in Iraq; it also shows video clips of terrorist attacks.  In another segment, the anchor, with a Koran and rifle positioned on the desk in front of him, refers to the Gaza disengagement as a “victory” for Islamists.  The last segment says the Muslim world was “filled with joy” by the hurricanes that hit the U.S.

The second broadcast, posted in early October, runs for 19 minutes, beginning with verses from the Koran and images of Al Qaeda members being trained in Afghanistan.  The announcer discusses in detail various attacks in Iraq, including the first reported attack by a female suicide bomber.  In one segment, the anchor asks viewers to support Al Jazeera reporter Tayseer Alouni, who was recently convicted in Spain for assisting Al Qaeda.  The anchor later denounces Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas for working with Israelis and squashing the “spirit of jihad” in Gaza.   Another segment discusses the plight of starving Muslims in Nigeria, claiming that they are ignored by the West and those Islamic countries that work with Western countries.

The third broadcast appeared in mid-October.  Unlike the first two broadcasts, the anchor in the third uses a red kheffiya to mask his face and there is no rifle or Koran in sight.  The first portion of the broadcast discusses the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigade (Hamas’ military wing) and their efforts to bring jihad to “free Jerusalem.”  As in the second broadcast, the tension between the Palestinian Authority police and Hamas is noted.  The anchor then praises Hamas as “muhajideen” for their struggles.  The last segment mentions attacks in Afghanistan by the Taliban and the arrest of a Taliban spokesperson by Pakistani officials.
