Islamic Militant Online Magazine Focuses on Gaza

Posted: February 17, 2009

The latest issue of an online magazine for Islamic militants focuses on Israel's military action in Gaza to stop Hamas rockets from being fired at Israeli towns and cities.

Sada al Jihad (Arabic for Echo of Jihad), an Arabic language monthly magazine that is posted on Web sites commonly used by Islamic militants, released its 32nd issue on January 28, 2009.

Articles in the issue urge Hamas to follow the path of militancy in order to defeat the Israeli enemy. The magazine also portrays the people of Gaza as victims of "the siege that is at the hands of the infidel Jews and from behind them the American oppressor."

Sada al-Jihad first began appearing online in 2005, and a year later merged with the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF), an umbrella propaganda organization for Islamic extremists that distributes videos, literature and other messages for terrorist groups. The magazine claims it is "for the jihad and mujahideen everywhere."

Abu Azzam al-Ansari, an Egyptian who was living in Saudi Arabia, founded Sada al-Jihad. In June 2007, al-Ansari was arrested by Saudi authorities in Medina on charges of using the Internet to plan terrorist attacks, recruit supporters and publish literature on militant ideology. Al-Ansari admitted that he was influenced by other Islamic militant Web sites before he created Sada al-Jihad and that he too decided to become a "promoter of jihad" on the Internet.

This latest issue of the magazine opens with an editorial, titled "The Gaza War: If we lose, our enemies will benefit," which urges people to take this "historical opportunity to annihilate the throne of the oppressor" and "assist the people of Gaza with legitimate jihad, such as money, spirit and words."

Another article, titled "Gaza, attacked by the Jews and besieged by the apostates and infidels," criticizes Egypt for "working hand in hand with the Jews instead of killing them." The article also incites violence, saying "The struggle with the Jews and their followers is not a verbal struggle, but rather it is bigger than that. It is a struggle of blood, destruction, life and death…"

Other articles in the issue include "Reflections on the jurisprudence of Jihad, part two," "The lies of the blood profiteers are uncovered in the cities of Gaza and al-Ahya," and a Sada al-Jihad special titled "Gaza, a war that distinguished the ranks and uncovered positions."

The issue also includes transcripts of recent audio messages by Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and second in command Ayman al Zawahiri. In Bin Laden's message, which is titled "A Call for Jihad to Stop the Aggression on Gaza" and released on January 14, 2009, he urges the "Muslim nation" to defeat the "Zionist entity" and assure the Palestinians that Al Qaeda's "fate is tied to yours in fighting the crusader-Zionist coalition, in fighting until victory or martyrdom." Bin Laden also states that "the duty is to urge people to jihad and to enlist the youth into jihad brigades."

Zawahiri's message, which was posted on January 6, 2009 and titled "The Massacre of Gaza and the Siege of the Traitors," called on Muslims to attack Israeli and Western targets around the world. In the message Zawahiri states: "Strike its interests wherever you encounter them...thwart the efforts of these traitors by striking the interests of the enemies of Islam - namely, the Christians and the Jews - wherever and by whatever means you can."

This issue of Sada al-Jihad is the latest in a series of messages from terrorist groups and their supporters threatening Jews and Israel over Gaza.
