ADL Letter to The Nation
Note: ADL's letter prompted a meeting of The Nation's Advertising Acceptability Committee, which has notified the advertiser, the Institute for Historical Review, that it may not run advertising in future issues.

Letters to the Editor The Nation |
April 21, 2004 |
To the Editor:
What was The Nation thinking when it accepted an advertisement for an anti-Semitic book? (May 3, 2004, p. 58). The ad from the Institute for Historical Review (IHR), a leading clearinghouse of Holocaust denial, promotes The Founding Myths of Modern Israel, a book that denies that the Holocaust occurred and claims that Hitler never intended to kill Jews.
Titled "Unmasking Israel's Most Dangerous Myths," the ad openly proclaims the Holocaust to be fictional, labeling the Holocaust story an "historical myth cited to justify Zionist aggression and repression." The ad is illustrated with various symbols, among them a swastika.
Doesn't The Nation have advertising acceptability standards that identify and reject offensive content? If it does, it somehow missed the obvious here. Unfortunately, giving space to a group that sponsors Holocaust denial only lends them credibility and perpetuates a lie.

Abraham H. Foxman National Director
