As Israel carries out its difficult disengagement from Gaza, your editorial should be focusing on what the Palestinians have to do rather than criticizing Israel ("Gaza Reality Check," August 18).
What your editorial ignores is that Israel would not have been in Gaza in the first place, if not for Arab aggression in 1967. Israel only kept control of Gaza after returning the Sinai to Egypt because Egypt turned it down. Israel would have been ready to withdraw from Gaza years ago, if not for unabated Palestinian violence and terrorism. If the Palestinians succeed in asserting order in Gaza after the disengagement and clamp down on terrorist operations, Israeli-Palestinian negotiations can move forward.
The Palestinians would have a chance at a better life if only they could demonstrate that they are serious about living alongside Israel in peace and security.
