To the Editor:

Re, "Charges of 'Traitor' for Chavez Ally Turned Critic" (news story, Nov.  21):

Venezuelan Governor Tarek Wiliam Saab's allegation that General Raul Isaias Baduel "has been captured by the international ultra right wing, by international Zionism" exemplifies how in the Chavez era, anti-Semitism is being used as a political tool.

Saab employs classic anti-Semitic canards of Jewish control that have been propagated for millennia in politically unstable environments. Criticism of General Baduel for his alleged ties to the Jewish community and conspiratorial accusations about international Zionism are proof of the alarmingly common use of these notions in Venezuela, and that anti-Semitism is very much tolerated by the current Venezuelan government.

  Sincerely,

The Anti-Defamation League
