Greek Government Must Denounce Anti-Semitic Attack on Holocaust Memorial

New York, NY, October 10, 2003… The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called on the government of Greece to denounce and investigate a recent anti-Semitic attack on a Holocaust memorial.  Vandals desecrated the Memorial dedicated to the thousands of Greek Jews who perished during the Holocaust, located in a 13th century Jewish cemetery in the northwestern city of Ioannina, with slogans such as "Death to Jews" and "Jews Out".

"We respectfully urge the government of Greece to publicly denounce this attack and to thoroughly investigate this incident and expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators," Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, wrote in a letter to Constantine Simitis, Prime Minister of Greece.

None of the gravestones were vandalized, although vandals damaged three gravestones at the cemetery nearly two years ago.
