WHEREAS, for over two years, the State of Israel has been besieged by Palestinian violence and terrorism;
WHEREAS, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasir Arafat has made it clear over the past twenty-five months that he has no intention of stopping terrorism or hindering the terrorist infrastructure. Indeed, Arafat and the Palestinian Authority are themselves engaged in providing material support for terrorist organizations, procuring explosives for terrorist operations, and procuring weapons capable of inflicting great damage on Israeli cities and citizens;
WHEREAS, the Israeli government has made it clear that it remains committed to resuming negotiations and making progress in the peace process so long as they have a viable Palestinian partner who does not engage in terrorism and violence;
WHEREAS, throughout this period of conflict, many in the international community have been unduly and unfairly critical of Israeli operations and policies, and have held Israel to a different standard than other nations;
WHEREAS, the Bush Administration has articulated a clear position that the Palestinians must engage in a process of reform and democratization and elect leaders that are truly committed to peace and reconciliation and the ending of terrorism and violence; Therefore be it
RESOLVED that the Anti-Defamation League reaffirms its support for the State of Israel and its fundamental right to protect its citizens from violence; Be it further
RESOLVED that the Anti-Defamation League reaffirms its appreciation to the Government of the United States for its stalwart support of the State of Israel. Be it further
RESOLVED that the Anti-Defamation League reiterates its call on the international community to recognize Israel's right to defend itself and protect its citizens, and to actively adopt a tough and sustained stance opposing Palestinian terrorism and supporting the development of a viable, reformed and responsible Palestinian leadership that will to promote reconciliation with Israel to replace the current leadership.
