ADL Denounces Sheriff's Choice of Kris Kobach to Train Deputies on Immigration Law
Phoenix, AZ, February 9, 2010 ... The Arizona Region of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today denounced Sheriff Joe Arpaio's decision to hire attorney Kris Kobach to train Maricopa County deputies on immigration law. Attorney Kobach is "Of Counsel" to the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI), the public interest law affiliate of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the largest anti-immigration group in the country.
Both IRLI and FAIR blame immigrants for various problems in the United States, from committing crimes to creating slums, triggering environmental problems, and causing businesses and schools to discriminate against American workers and students. FAIR also has an ongoing strategy of founding and empowering smaller anti-immigrant advocacy groups that promote xenophobia, and has accepted over a million dollars from the Pioneer Fund, an organization that promotes eugenics.
"We find it absolutely outrageous that Sheriff Arpaio has chosen an individual with an obvious bias, who works on behalf of an anti-immigrant group to conduct training on immigration law and ethnic profiling. This shows that he is not serious about dealing with the concerns that have been raised about his tactics and treatment of immigrants," said Bill Straus, Regional Director of the ADL's Arizona office. "It's difficult to interpret this as anything but an affront to the federal government, the community at large and certainly the Hispanic community," Straus added.
