ADL 'Deeply Disturbed' By Inspector General's Report Detailing Discrimination In Federal Air Marshal Service

Palm Beach, FL, February 9, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed "concern and disappointment" at allegations of discriminatory and bigoted conduct by senior officials at the Federal Air Marshal Service, as outlined in a report issued today by the Homeland Security Department's Inspector General's Office.

While making clear that discrimination was not widespread, the inspector general's report nevertheless outlined several incidents of harassment and intimidation at the highest levels of the service, including in the Orlando Field Office, where a mock "Jeopardy" game board was created that designated categories for veterans, Blacks, Hispanics, women and homosexuals with derogatory categories and titles.  Federal Air Marshal Service Director Robert Bray has described the "Jeopardy!" board as "egregious and despicable."

"We are deeply concerned and disappointed by the report that some employees of this vital federal security agency were reportedly intimidated and made uncomfortable because of the allegedly discriminatory and bigoted behavior of their superiors," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  "We hope that the Federal Air Marshal Service will act quickly on the report's findings and recommendations, so that the service can refocus on the important mission of protecting our skies from future acts of terror."

ADL's National Executive Committee, the agency's highest policymaking body, is currently meeting in Palm Beach, Florida, where leaders from across the country have gathered to discuss and hear from a range of speakers on issues of anti-Semitism, racism, bigotry and prejudice.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
