ADL Condemns As 'Inexcusable' Statements By North Carolina Pastor Declaring That Building An Electrified Fence Is A Way To 'Get Rid Of All The Lesbians And Queers'

Washington, D.C., May 23, 2012 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned as "inexcusable" the statements made by Maiden, North Carolina Pastor Charles L. Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in his May 13 sermon in which he declared that ". . . a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers . . . [is to] build a great, big, large fence — 150 or 100 mile long — put all the lesbians in there . . . Do the same thing for the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can't get out . . .  And you know what, in a few years, they'll die."

David C. Friedman, ADL's Washington, DC Regional Director, issued the following statement:

Pastor Worley's videotaped remarks are deplorable, inexcusable and incompatible with the tenets of his faith.  Pastor Worley owes the LGBT community and the people of Maiden, North Carolina a swift and unequivocal apology.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
