ADL’s Annual Calendar Highlights Diversity in the Performing Arts

New York, NY, July 12, 2001 … Transcending religious, cultural and ethnic differences, those involved in the performing arts embrace diversity at every step. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recognizes this in its 2001-2002 Memo and Date Book, an annual calendar of understanding highlighting the religious and cultural observances of Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Baha’i, Shinto and others.

"ADL’s Memo and Date Book was created out of respect for the great religious and cultural diversity of America, and the performing arts is an exemplary field to showcase that diversity," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "The calendar is helpful to educators and businesses in becoming more sensitive to the important holidays of their workforce when granting holiday leave or scheduling meetings, workshops and conferences."

Performing artists, including actors, musicians and filmmakers representing a variety of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, are featured on every page. The handy-sized planner also includes a glossary of holidays with their meanings explained and special events celebrated in our schools, workplaces and communities.

Some of the artists highlighted in the 2001-2002 Memo and Date Book are Jewish-American actor/comedian Billy Crystal, African-American singers Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, Taiwanese-born director Ang Lee, Lebanese-American actor F. Murray Abraham, Italian-American actress Anne Bancroft, Cuban-born singer Gloria Estefan, Jewish-American film director Steven Spielberg and French-born, Chinese-American cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The cost of the 2001-2002 Memo and Date Book is $6.95, plus $1.70 for shipping and handling. Send check or money order to: Anti-Defamation League, Memo and Date Book, Dept. MD23, 823 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY, 10017. To receive bulk shipping discounts please call (212) 885-7951.
