ADL Welcomes Conviction Of Former Neo-Nazi Leader On Hate Crime Charge In Utah

New York, NY, April 24, 2007 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) praised the U.S. Justice Department for their successful prosecution of Shaun Walker, former chairman of the neo-Nazi National Alliance, on charges of committing a federal hate crime.  Walker and two co-defendants were convicted April 20 by a federal jury in Salt Lake City of charges stemming from racially motivated beatings at two bars in 2002 and 2003.

"It is gratifying that Justice Department successfully pursued hate crime charges against these men, whose agenda was to intimidate minorities through violence," said Deborah Lauter, ADL Civil Rights Director.  "Hate crimes are insidious because of the effect they can have on an entire community. This crime was significant because it showed that the white supremacist ideology can lead its followers, and indeed its leaders to commit violent acts against minorities."

As the chairman of the National Alliance (NA), a virulently anti-Semitic and racist group based in Hillsboro, West Virginia, Walker advocated an ideology that demonized Jews and other minorities and called for a whites-only homeland.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the beatings were part of a plan to intimidate non-whites in Salt Lake City.  Walker, Travis Massey, the former Utah spokesman for the NA, and a third man, Eric Egbert, were convicted of assaulting a Mexican-American man in 2002, and of conspiracy to interfere with the civil rights of individuals based on their race.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
