ADL Condemns Death of Newark, CA Teenager in Apparent Hate Crime

San Francisco, October 21, 2002 - The Central Pacific Region of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned the apparent hate crime murder of Eddie Araujo, a 17-year old Newark, California boy. The 17-year old's body was discovered this week following his disappearance last week.

Jonathan Bernstein, Director of the ADL's Central Pacific Region office issued the following statement. "We were shocked and saddened to learn of Eddie Araujo's murder. No one should be targeted for hate based on their gender. We extend sincere condolences to Eddie's family, and hope that Eddie's death will be a lesson to our community that we must stand together against those who wish to target us based on hate." Bernstein commended the Newark Police Department for its investigation thus far. Bernstein urges members of the community to speak out against this horrible crime.

News reports have stated that Rev. Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church intends to protest at the funeral of Mr. Araujo. The ADL has found that the virulently homophobic Westboro Baptist Church has picketed the gay community at hundreds of events nationwide. The WBC has spread their message of hate against Jews, gays, Blacks, Christians and the United States.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
