COLORADO

Midland Hammerskins
A regional chapter of Hammerskin Nation formed in 2000 that encompasses Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. The group was founded by former members of the Confederate Hammerskins, who have been active in the region since the early 1990s. One of the group's significant activities was providing security for a high-profile white power concert, the Rocky Mountain Heritage Fest, in July 2002. The event drew more than 150 racist skinheads from around the U.S. and from as far away as Germany. The “fest” was funded by Heritage Press, a white supremacist mail-order publishing house in Colorado Springs, and featured white power bands such as Max Resist, Intimidation One, Final War, H8 Machine, and the Denver City Troopers.

Unaffiliated Skinheads
May 2002: One of Colorado's most notorious incidents involving racist skinheads was resolved when Jeremiah Barnum pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder in the November 18, 1997, murder of Oumar Dia, an African immigrant. Barnum, who received a 12-year sentence, accompanied white supremacist Nathan Thill, who shot Dia four times. Thill was also accused of shooting and paralyzing bystander Jeannie Van Velkinburgh, who tried to help Dia. Thill was convicted for murder in the shootings and given a life term plus 32 years in December 1999.

CAVEAT: NOT EVERY SKINHEAD A RACIST
The skinhead subculture was not originally racist —and, in fact, today around the world there remain many non-racist or explicitly anti-racist skinheads (often called sharps, for “skinheads against racial prejudice”).
