E-Mail Campaign Against Marriott Based on Inaccurate Information

ADL has received numerous inquiries regarding an e-mail message that calls on Jews to boycott Marriott hotels, claiming that the international hotel chain sent a letter to a Jerusalem travel agent addressed to "Yerushalaim, Occupied Territories." This e-mail message is based on inaccurate information.

While a Marriott letter was addressed to an Israeli travel agent in February 2002, it was actually sent as part of a mass mailing from a list provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a Switzerland-based organization which maintains a database for the travel industry. Once alerted to the offensive and erroneous address, IATA took full responsibility for the incident. IATA has apologized to the Jerusalem travel agent and has accepted full responsibility for the error. Marriott International was not responsible in any way for the incident.
