The Sprint PCS Rumor: Calls to "Palestine"
An e-mail has been circulating alleging that Sprint and/or Sprint PCS telephone bills mislabel long distance calls to Israel as calls made to "Palestine."

There is no evidence that Sprint/Sprint PCS labels long distance calls to Israel as calls to Palestine.

ADL has received many complaints about this. However, the complaintants have reported that they heard this information "from a friend." No one, including Sprint and Sprint PCS customers, have been able to provide a copy of a bill demonstrating this alleged practice.

It is quite possible that this rumor started with people who saw "Palestine" and an associated code listed on Sprint's long distance code page. In January 1999, the International Telecomunications Union in Geneva gave the Palestinian Authority its own country code for long distance calls. Israel's country code is 972. The Palestinian Authority's is 970. Sprint, as all other long distance companies, uses the 970 code. Sprint currently lists the 970 code as belonging to the Palestinian Authority (and not Palestine). Thus, anyone calling the 970 country code - to phones within the Palestinian phone system - will have "Palestinian Authority" on their bill. Anyone calling the 972 country code - to phones within the Israeli phone system - will have "Israel" posted on their bill.
