Plot Summary: "Horseman Without A Horse"
Episodes 1 - 41 RULE

Episodes 1-11

The opening plot shows an Egyptian child, Nagib (the father of Hafez, the main figure), being kidnapped by a Turkish nobleman who wants to raise him in his home. Nagib grows to be an army officer, and he and Malak (the nobleman's daughter) are in love.

The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion: Hoax of Hate

"Protocols" Appear in Plot As Egyptian TV Series Continues
The nobleman's wife vehemently opposes their marriage, but after much family dispute, the nobleman and his wife, Anourin, agree to the marriage. Anourin incites the family against Nagib and has him expelled to Sudan. Malak gives birth to their baby, a boy they name Hafez. Anourin orders that the baby be kept out of the mansion.

After several years, Malak dies of grief. Hafez is taken in and grows up in the mansion with the family. The nobleman, Hafez' grandfather, dies. The banished Nagib comes back from Sudan and takes his son. Anourin comes to Nagib's family home accompanied by soldiers looking for her grandson, Hafez, but Hafez paints his face black and she does not recognize him.

When the Urabi Revolution (1882) against the Turkish ruling class and against the British presence fails, the British conquer Egypt. Hafez is 13 years old. He joins the resistance to the British, enters a British military camp, ostensibly to pick up the garbage, but plants a bomb, blowing it up. The episode ends with Hafez, the hero fighting the British, meeting Margaret, who has a copy of the Protocols.

The plot continues describing the Jews' attempts to prevent the exposure of the contents of the Protocols. The elderly Jews come to Margaret to convince her to give them the book. The Jews continue to be presented as scheming, extorting, and threatening. They threaten Princess Margaret, unsuccessfully, and even kidnap Hafez, who has stolen the book.

Episode 12

The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" continues to be a major element in the plot, with the Jewish characters attempting to hide the existence of the book.

Episode 13

The plot continues to develop and the relationships between the characters are becoming clearer. In this episode the anti-Semitic "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" are mentioned only once. It is in the first scene where Hafez is afraid that Princess Margaret will discover that he has stolen the book of the Protocols and expresses his wish to translate it as quickly as he can.

Episode 14

Jewish efforts to keep the contents of the secret book “Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion” from being revealed in Egypt remains a central theme of the Horseman narrative.

In this episode, the central character, Hafez, has stolen a book from Margaret, a Russian Jew. When he attempts to sell the book to a group of Jews, however, they inform him it is the wrong book.

The Jews are relieved that Hafez has not brought them the "Protocols." They realize the actual “Protocols” document, written in Russian, may still be in Margaret’s possesssion, meaning that their secret plans have not been revealed.

Meanwhile, one of the Turkish family members tells Hafez that he knew a Russian girl named Natasha, and it looks like Hafez has found a solution to translate the book.

Margaret discovers that the book was stolen, and she remembers that Hafez saw her put the book in its place.

Episode 15:

Margaret congratulates Binyamin and Yaakov, two visibly Orthodox Jewish men, for stealing “the book.” But the men inform Margaret that it is not the correct copy, and Margaret expresses surprise and astonishment.

Believing that Hafez is now in possession of the incriminating book, Margaret advises the Jews that they must find him immediately; otherwise, their secret plans may be revealed. The Jews agree that they must find him, and quickly. Meanwhile, Hafez has disguised himself as Farahat Effendi, a journalist. He asks Sigris, a love interest who speaks Russian, to secretly translate the book he has stolen, telling her that “it is a national duty.” He tells Sigris that the book’s contents are “dangerous and very confidential.”

Episode 16:

It has become clear that the protagonist, Hafez, has "100 faces" around which the plot is forming, according to the changing circumstances. Hafez appears as Luciano (an Italian artist), Farahat Effendi (a journalist), Mundhir Bek (a lawyer), Roberto (the British prison's commander) and Mr. Silvat (a Spanish\French nobleman).

Farahat Effendi (Hafez disguised as a journalist) asks Sigris about the

Protocols he gave her to translate. Sigris says the contents are so disturbing that she has been unable to sleep.

Sigris claims that at the beginning she thought the document was about a

Gangster’s childish ideas, but then she was shocked to realize that the Protocols outline a Jewish conspiracy aimed at "capturing" the world. She says the book is filled with racist ideology and hatred toward all humanity.

Sigris expresses her strong will to translate the book.

Episode 17:

Hafez (in his different disguises) tries to regain his right to his mother's property (which was taken from him by the Turkish family). It is becoming clear that Hafez is "the Fox" that is wanted all over Egypt.

Episode 18:

Hafez has a discussion with a group of people around a table about “the plans” outlined in the Protocols. While not referring to Jews specifically, the discussion seems to focus on whether or not the group should expose or publish the plans that Hafez has secretly obtained.

Hafez warns: "Be careful! As they hide their plans, we will have to hide what we know temporarily".

Episode 19:

Margaret and her husband fear that Hafez is escaping, and that Yaakov and Binyamin (the Jews) know where he is hiding. Margaret and the other Jews conspire to keep the book's disappearance a secret.

Sigris (who was supposed to translate the book from Russian to Arabic) leaves Egypt for an unknown destination.

Hafez says to Yusuf and some other friends:

“The situation in Palestine is dangerous. The Jewish immigration, land purchases, and the settlements are frightening. A Zionist organization, led by someone named Arthur Rupin, built a neighborhood for Jews in the city of Jaffa, calling it Tel Aviv.”

Yusuf: "... We have to relate it to what has been translated from the Zionist book".

Hafez: "Right, Yusuf, but it is important to translate the (entire) book".

At the end of the episode, Galila reads to Sheikh Hamed pieces from the "Protocols":

"We had spread the seeds of conflict between human beings in all fields of life: personal and national, through spreading religious and tribal extremism, and conflicts between the same religion's people. We will increase ethnic chauvinism. Governments will hesitate to help their neighbors resist us, since each will be convinced that any action against us will be disastrous for itself”.

Galila asks Sheikh Hamed: "What's that, Sheikh Hamed? These sayings are crazy".

Episode 20

The Protocols are not mentioned in this episode. Hafez disguises himself as Elias and goes to Syria. He meets with Amin and asks for his help to complete financial arrangements. Camellia secretly informs Hafez that the Jews, Yaakov and Binyamin, are looking for him.

At the end of the episode, Margaret and Edward are suspicious and question Camellia about when she saw Hafez. Camellia succeeds in evading their questions and answers only that she saw Hafez going out of the palace.

Episodes 21 - 27

Richard, the British detective, begins to suspect the close relationship between “the Fox” and Hafez, the protagonist who appears in myriad disguises throughout the seven episodes. Hafez meets on several occasions with Sigris. Sigris describes "the book" she was asked to translate, telling Hafez it is about a cultural forgery and that these people (the Jews) are “deceiving humanity.”

Hafez, again disguised as a journalist, tells Sigris that the Protocols book is about a “hellish plan."

Meanwhile, more and more people are learning the true identity of "the Fox."

In Episode 27, Yaakov and Binyamin, the stereotypical Jewish characters who have appeared in earlier segments, are arranging for a money transfer to “Mr. Smith” (Hafez in disguise) to procure a copy of the book. It is a setup. "Mr. Smith" helps the police to arrest Binyamin. Yaakov says that everything must be done to free Binyamin.

Margaret calls the police and informs them that "Mr. Smith" is really "the fox." "Mr. Smith" separates from Sigris, telling her that he is going back to London, and gives her the money for "the cultural forgery," explaining that the money is from Binyamin and Yaakov. The police arrive at the hotel and spread out, searching for Hafez. In the final scene, Hafez confronts the police with a gun in his hands.

Episodes 28 – 32

Having escaped from the police, Hafez continues to elude Richard, the British detective, and others using various disguises. In episode 31, Hafez, disguised this time as a Tunisian journalist, appears at a birthday party for Sigris. He uncovers his face in front of the amazed guests, and then threatens his audience with a gun and a bomb while railing against British occupation and the Turks.

Hafez is captured by the police and incarcerated.

Meanwhile, the Jews fear that “the book” and its contents will be revealed if Hafez is executed. Binyamin asks Eliyahu and Ahron to bring him the book.

The British detective and policemen discover that Hafez has escaped once again.

Sigris and Mr. Bonfe wait for Hafez at the hotel, but he never arrives. Mr. Bonfe convinces Sigris to join him for a two-day trip to Luxor, and when they arrive, Mr. Bonfe removes his disguise and reveals himself as Hafez.

Episode 33:

Hafez and Sigris are together at least. Camellia and Yousuf threaten Edward with a gun, trying to force him to convess to Camellia’s rape.

Episode 34-5:

Hafez appears as he did in the first chapter - as an old man telling his story. He speaks about the years when Egypt dealt with the British and Zionists and says that, later on, Zionism strengthened. He tells his listeners that World War I was prompted by Zionism, though it is unknown what the goal was.

In a flashback scene, the Jews are shown sitting in their room, discussing the war. They say that the war is a “golden opportunity” for the Zionist movement and that they are afraid that if England wins the war, it will gain control of the Middle East region. One of the Jews says that it will not happen since Chaim Weizmann has good relations with British policymakers, who feel solidarity with the Zionist movement. The Jews agree that it is important to cooperate with England if it wins the war and gains control of Palestine.

Sigris is asked to complete the translation of “the Protocols” in order for it to be given to Palestinian students in Al-Azhar University. Hafez remarks that the book was the first thing published in Egypt, “about the Zionist resistence.”

Episodes 36 – 39:

In these episodes, the Jews are portrayed as a group conspiring against the rest of the world. The Zionist movement is taking steps to increase Jewish immigration into Palestine, while the Egyptians are planning to fight the Zionists. Aside from one specific reference to the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” the episodes also appear to reference another classic anti-Semitic myth, The Franklin Prophecy, which falsely claims that American statesman Benjamin Franklin made anti-Jewish statements during the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The Franklin Prophecy has found widening acceptance in the Muslim and Arab media, where it has been used to criticize Israel and Jews in news articles and statements.

In a meeting of “the Jews,” Eliyahu and Ahron are told to kill Hafez. The Jews also discuss Benjamin Franklin’s resistance to the Jewish immigration, in an apparent reference to the anti-Semitic myth, The Franklin Prophesy.

Meanwhile, Nada returns from a trip to Palestine. She says the Jews have taken control over lands in Palestine and that they are “kidnapping Palestinian children and killing them.” She says that the Zionist groups have closed all of the Arab newspapers.

One of the Jews is shown reading Protocol No. 22: “In hour hands is the greatest power of our day – Gold. In two days we can produce from our storehouse any quantity we may please.” The Jews agree that in order to accomplish what is written, they need to use violence and money, and that the world will be in peace only when it has surrendered to their laws. Eliyahu and Aharon shoot at Hafez (in disguise as Farahat Effendi) but miss their intended target, instead wounding the British detective, Richard. Hafez reveals himself to Richard as “the Fox” and encourages him to read the Jewish book. Richard obtains a copy of the Protocols and has it translated to English.

Hafez decides to travel to Palestine. He gives Sigris the Protocols to spread throughout Egypt.

Episodes 40-41:

In the concluding episodes of “Horseman Without a Horse” the Jews are portrayed as leading a conspiracy to form a Zionist state in Palestine while taking the lives of anyone who stands in the way. The series comes to a close with an inscription: “Who fights the occupation is not a terrorist” and contains other thinly veiled political comment on the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Hafez fakes his death in an effort to throw off his many pursuers. The Jews kill Sigris because she translated the Protocols, and blow up the headquarters of the Egyptian resistance. Hafez, still alive and in disguise, infiltrates the group of plotting Jews, where members of the group celebrate their progress toward the goal of a Zionist state. When the Jews are informed that they have succeeded in blowing up the Egyptian resistance building, there is general rejoicing, and one of the Jews states: “… who stands in front of our goal… we have to deprive him from living. This is our right.” The Jews raise their glasses in a toast “to life.”

Hafez angrily plans to destroy the room of Jews, but hesitates when he sees a little girl. Hafez tells the child’s mother that, in destroying the headquarters of the Egyptian resistance, the Jews “killed many defenseless and innocent people.”

Hafez ends with a monologue, telling his viewers: “I wish you to protect your children from a vicious disease called Zionism.” The series ends as it began, with Hafez, many years later, walking in the desert. The program closes with the inscription, “He who fights the occupation is not a terrorist.”
